Who is responsible?

Blocked drains are the repsonsibility of the resident or business to their property boundary. Most often blockages are restricted to these areas as public sewer space undergoes frequent maintenance.

How to prevent blocked drains?

Blocked drains are generally caused by substances or products other than water being flushed or washed into the sewer system. There are a number of items which should not be washed or flushed down a drain, these include:

  • Waste food and scraps
  • Paints and solvents
  • Cooking byproducts such as oils and fats
  • Nappies and baby wipes
  • Condoms, bandages and dressings
  • Women’s sanitary products
  • Animal waste and food
  • Cotton buds and cotton wool
  • Razor blades and razors

How to clear blocked drains?

In years gone by the only solution was to either use products such as draino and/or identify the problem area and a plumber would dig up and manually clear the drain or replace the section of pipe at the location of the blockage.

Fortunately technology has advance since this point and now plumbers have the ability to locate bloackages by using CCTV cameras to identify the location of major blockages. The drain can then be flushed or jetted with a high powered jetter. If a dig up is required it can be isolated to much smaller site and hence provide a great saving to the customer. Stuart Scott Plumbing’s affiliate SS Plumbing & Draincare can provide this service.
